This is the highest level Garriott descendant tree. It shows the children of Thomas (Garriott - surname assumed).. Some databases show a John S Garriott, wife Catherine, to be the father of Jonathan. Jonathan is really the start of any concrete genealogy and so his generation is listed as '0'. His known children are the three Garriott brothers of whom family tradition often speaks. Where the three Garriott brothers emigrated from is subject to debate. Family tradition has it that the first Garriotts to come to America came from France, but no one has produced specific information. Indeed, fairly solid arguments can be made against any 'direct links' to France, though the French origin of our surname is hardly in doubt. The fact that Rietstap's Amorial General lists 'GARRIOTT' as a French name, in addition to its occurence there (along with variations), further suports our French roots. So in some way or another, a Garriott ancestor almost certainly came from France. But where did he come TO? Probably England. At least one occurence of 'Garriott' has been found there (a Christening of an Anne Garriott in 1765) while several other name variations have also been uncovered in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England. (Some of these may have originated seperately.)
At any rate, we know that a James Garriott sailed from York, England to Maryland onboard the Minerva on 24 May, 1774. He was 24 years old and listed as four year indentured servant - a joiner. This James is exactly the right age to have been James the brother of Ambrose S Garriott who was the ancestor to most North American Garriotts. This is the only known record of a Garriott immigrating to America.
